JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Shelter Advocate, part-time
The position is 20 hours per week. Benefits include paid time off for holidays, sick, vacation, and personal time. Will work from the SAFE Project office between the hours of Mon-Thu 8:30am-4:30pm and Fri 8:30am-12:30pm plus evening and weekend shifts for the hotline, events, and some other work. Will report directly to the Executive Director and work closely with the Shelter and Housing Coordinator to serve clients who stay in the emergency shelter.
Important and crucial advocacy and shelter duties include but are not limited to crisis intervention, services, support, safety planning, resources, and referrals to survivors of domestic and family violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Responsible for intake paperwork, sheltering survivors and their kids and pets, assisting with Protection Orders, some transportation, and accompanying clients to the hospital, court, and other agencies., and data and document entry into our database. Provide survivors in shelter with groceries and other needs, ongoing advocacy, and case management. Assist clients in shelter through setting and working toward safety and sustainability goals including job and housing searches or plans for relocation. Assist with property upkeep and cleaning, stocking household supplies, and any shelter duties as needed. May represent clients and SAFE Project at some multidisciplinary team meetings. Required to take the 24-hour hotline phone (remotely) for one on-call overnight shift each week, one weekend every 4-6 weeks, and some holidays. An on-call stipend of $30-$60 is paid for all hotline shifts.
The selected candidate must successfully pass criminal history and background checks and complete SAFE Project's direct services/ advocacy training within 90 days of being hired. The training typically takes place on-site over evenings and weekends for a two week period.
Skills and qualifications:
● High school diploma, Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience
● Case management or related experience preferred
● Excellent leadership and communication skills (written, oral, and public speaking)
● Ability to work some evenings and weekends for hotline shifts and some client services, as well as events and some other work
● Experience with diverse populations preferred
● Ability to communicate and collaborate well within a team
● Ability to also work independently with limited supervision
● Proficient use of technology, including Google workspace programs
● Must complete SAFE Project’s 40-hour advocacy training
● Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
