About the Museum of the Mountain Man:
The Museum of the Mountain Man preserves and shares the history and culture of the mountain man era in the American West. Located in Pinedale, Wyoming, it serves as a cultural resource for the community and visitors. Our exhibits feature authentic artifacts, artwork, and immersive displays that bring to life the stories of mountain men, explorers, and Native American tribes who shaped the region.
Along with exhibitions, the museum offers educational programs, workshops, and community events, aiming to engage a wide audience, from school groups to history enthusiasts. We provide resources that enrich the understanding of this unique aspect of American heritage.
The museum is committed to preserving its collections and expanding outreach, with future initiatives, including a major capital campaign to enhance our facilities and collections. These efforts aim to inspire a love of history and culture in our community and beyond.
Mountain Men and their Plains Indian Partners were the first iconic characters of the American West giving the Museum of the Mountain Man a national and international interest. The Museum welcomes over 10,000 visitors from all 50 states and 30 countries each year.
Position Overview:
The Museum of the Mountain Man is ready to be transformed by the power of philanthropy!
The inaugural Director of Development will play a pivotal role in shaping the museum's fundraising strategy and driving revenue growth. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position will focus on developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising plan, building donor relationships, and fostering community engagement to support the museum’s mission.
Working with an established donor base, the Director will lead efforts for a potential major capital campaign encompassing:
- Construction of Fort Sublette,
- Acquisition of the Bad Hand Plains Indian Collection, and
- Construction of a Collections Care Facility.
This role will focus on major, planned, and principal giving strategies, collaborating closely with museum staff, the governing board, and a newly created campaign advisory board.
Key Fundraising Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a strategic fundraising plan aligned with the museum’s mission.
- Engage with and cultivate the existing donor base, fostering long-term relationships.
- Lead a major capital campaign for Fort Sublette, the Bad Hand Plains Indian Collection, and a Collections Care Facility.
- Identify, cultivate, and solicit individual, corporate, and foundation donors for major, planned, and principal gifts.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with donors and stakeholders.
- Organize and manage fundraising events, campaigns, and initiatives.
- Collaborate with the museum’s leadership, governing board, and campaign advisory board to set funding priorities.
- Create compelling proposals, grant applications, and fundraising materials.
- Monitor and report on fundraising progress to stakeholders.
- Utilize data-driven approaches to refine fundraising strategies.
- Stay informed about fundraising trends, best practices, and regulations.
Additional Functions:
Based on the successful candidate’s skillset, additional responsibilities may be added, such as event planning, promotions (social media, newsletters, email lists), and marketing.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in fundraising or development, preferably in a nonprofit or cultural organization.
- The Museum of the Mountain Man is also willing to consider candidates with transferrable experience from a related field.
- Proven track record of successful fundraising campaigns and donor relations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are a must.
- The ability to engage a diverse audience in the message of the Museum.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Proficiency in CRM tracking and data management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Passion for the museum’s mission and the ability to convey it to donors.

About Pinedale:
Pinedale, Wyoming is located approximately 70 miles south of Jackson Hole in the upper Green River Valley Wyoming, surrounded by Wyoming, Gros Ventre and Wind River Mountain Ranges. It is the county seat for Sublette County. The areas offer world class outdoor recreation not limited to skiing, biking, hiking, climbing, hunting and fishing. There are hundreds of miles of remote hiking and backpacking trails in the Wind River and Wyoming mountains. When the snow falls, the area around Pinedale transforms into a winter sports haven. The Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail is renowned for its extensive and well-maintained groomed sledding routes. Additionally, the nearby White Pine Ski Area offers downhill skiing and snowboarding with spectacular mountain views. Abundant miles of regularly groomed Nordic ski trails provide quieter avenues to enjoy the winter landscape. The town itself features a meandering stream, numerous parks, and a beautiful public library.
We have excellent, award-winning K-12 schools, small class sizes, extensive programs for young children and young adults. The school-operated Pinedale Aquatic Center has an Olympic size swimming pool, a leisure pool with enormous fun slide and water current channel, a rock-climbing wall, basketball and racquetball courts, weights and treadmill equipment, and raised indoor track which offers summer and winter health and fitness programs for youth and adults. The public school system also operates an outdoor skateboard park in town. Youth sports include football, basketball, baseball, swimming, volleyball, wrestling, soccer, golf, dance, gymnastics, ice skating and ice hockey. There are many miles of paved walking and bike paths throughout town.
Wildlife is abundant, and it is not uncommon to see deer and moose at any time of the year in town. Elk, pronghorn antelope, black bear, grizzly bear, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, wolves and mountain lions also inhabit the wilderness areas. Area blue-ribbon streams and lakes have cutthroat trout, rainbow, brook, rainbow, brown, and kokanee salmon for incredible fishing opportunities.
The Pinedale Fine Arts Council offers many fine arts programs throughout the year including concerts, bands, dance, entertainment, and live music in the parks the summer. Annual events include an internationally renowned sled dog race, Winter Carnival, ice fishing derby, snowmobile races, 4th of July with fireworks, Green River Rendezvous and Rendezvous Pageant, summer rodeos, sailing regatta on Fremont Lake, summer brew festival, a fall half marathon/10K/5K/1-mile fun Walk/Run races, and airport flying events.
